Fairfax, VA – Today, former Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring announced his endorsement of Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw (D-Braddock) for Congress in Virginia’s 11th District.
Herring, who served as Virginia’s 47th Attorney General from 2014 to 2022, has been a progressive force in the Commonwealth throughout his career, leading on major issues including marriage equality, healthcare access, and voting rights. Prior to serving as Attorney General, Herring represented parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties in the Virginia State Senate and served on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.
Herring praised Walkinshaw as a standout in the next generation of Democratic leadership — someone whose unique combination of experience and conviction sets him apart in the race to succeed the late Congressman Gerry Connolly. Herring called Walkinshaw the leader best prepared to take on Trump’s dangerous agenda and deliver for Virginia families on Day One.
“Having served as attorney general, I know firsthand what it means to defend Virginians’ rights, protect vulnerable communities, and hold bad actors accountable,” said Mark Herring, Former Attorney General of Virginia. “James Walkinshaw has what it takes. He’s one of Virginia’s most talented young leaders and will represent Northern Virginia well in Congress. I’m proud to endorse him.”
Walkinshaw said Herring’s endorsement reflects the urgent need for leaders ready to take on Trump’s agenda from Day One.
“Mark Herring stood up to Trump when it mattered—and I’m honored he believes I’m the candidate who is ready to do the same,” said Walkinshaw. “With his added support—alongside that of our community and leaders determined to stop Trump—we’re building momentum in our campaign to take on Trump and deliver for Fairfax.”
Herring’s endorsement adds to the momentum Walkinshaw’s campaign has quickly generated — a movement powered by grassroots supporters and backed by leaders from Fairfax City Hall to Richmond to Capitol Hill — all united to protect democracy and fight for working families. To date, Walkinshaw has announced endorsements from 26 federal, state, and local leaders.
